Italo Pietrantonj Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2008

The Pietrantonj winery pays particular attention to the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape as the real focus of their production. Aged in traditional wooden reagala Montepulciano red wines gain great structure under the careful eye of the two sisters. The Pietrantonj sisters also grow other traditional varietals such as Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Malvasia and Pecorino.

The Pietrantonj’s have long chosen to pay close attention to the care of the vineyards, 90% of which have a system of espalier with spurred cordon and guyot. The Pietrantonj’s have also decided to lower their yields below those provided by the DOC in order to produce wines of excellent quality.

And so, with this tasty and traditional Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (it is 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo) we present a wine with intense ruby red color and a nose of dried roses, red fruit, leather and earth.  Luscious and satisfying to drink with red and black fruit, sweet spice, vanilla, licorice and tobacco leaf on the palate.

Sisters: Roberta + Alice Pietrantonj
The winery was founded in 1830, but it wasn't until 1889 that the winery began taking itself seriously when Roberta and Alice's great-great-great grandfather Alfonso became the first certified winemaker in the Abruzzi region. Still, the family vineyards are small plots spread about the hillsides surrounding this mountain village.

The vineyards, located on the hills between Victory and Corfe, enjoy an excellent sun exposure, a favorable ventilation and a remarkable temperature between day and night. These ideal conditions are due to the proximity of mountains and the presence of Aterno. The soil and climactic conditions have a positive effect on ripening enhancing the grape’s aromatic properties and maintaining the right acidity.
